Doris Benter is a New York State artist who creates texture based works that sit between painting, assemblages and relief on wood panel and canvas. Doris ‘s work was shaped by by her life growing up in a military family. Order, tradition, and quiet tension infuse her figurative works. Costume jewelry, military insignias, pins and broken, thrifted pieced are embedded into each piece. Religious elements—crosses, saints, and sacred relics speak to the spiritual legacy of her father’s second life as an Episcopal priest. These components infuse her work with reverence and personal mythology. By reclaiming and reimagining new uses for forgotten pieces, Doris honors the sacred, and the personal—transforming discarded materials into narratives of memory, identity, and transformation.
